Mira Slovak, a name to remember

Kathy and I are planning our honeymoon in Prague this September. While cogitating on the Czech Republic, a name from the past popped into my head – Mira Slovak.

I remember hearing the name during the heyday of the Gold Cup and Seafair hydro races on Lake Washington – when the fastest boats and drivers were from Seattle – when one could hear the loud thrumming of Merlin and Rolls Royce engines all the way across town in Fauntleroy. I remember hearing that he was a daring Czech pilot who had flown from behind the Iron Curtain to defect and had become a top-notch hydro pilot. I googled his name and found that he had died just last year. His obituary in the L.A. Times was a short, enjoyable read. What a life!
