Scheduled Update: SR 99 access pit #2 – Excavation of the rescue pit is complete

The upcoming steps get more interesting.

Excavation is complete at 120 feet in depth. The next task is to pour a concrete “cradle” on the bottom to support the drilling machine once it advances into the open pit. Bertha will attempt to grind her way through the concrete wall on the south side (upper left). If the drill face/bearings cannot achieve this, then crews will break through the necessary section of wall from the open side. Either way Bertha will push herself forward and onto the concrete cradle to rest while a large gantry crane moves over the hole and lifts out the pieces involved in the repair.
